RainToday received a lot of response regarding our recent article, “How To Prevent Unpaid Consulting: Timely Advice For Today's Service Providers”. One of the RainToday readers who contacted us, Dick Jacques, of Jacques Management LLC, told us about a policy he started implementing in February to eliminate the “unpaid consulting” dilemma entirely.
His new policy, rare in most professional services practices, involves charging a $2,000 retainer before meeting with prospects and providing a proposal. If the prospect decides to engage his services, then Dick credits the retainer towards the ultimate fee for the project. Otherwise, even if he does not win the project, he will still have been paid for his time.
