As with most "dicta," rules are meant to be broken. These "deadly" words/prhases are not grammatical "no-nos" but merely subjective opinions. Never use them? I don't think so. Use them sparingly? Of course. A good writer determines word/phrase usage by his/her audience, not "rules." Getting the readers' attention and having them react positively is the bottom line, not following the opinion du jour. |
