Resist the urge to respond to an RFP just because it's work you can do or the dollars attached are enticing. The question to ask is, "can you win the work?" If you didn't know about the RFP before it hit the streets, your chances of wining are low. Probably less than 20%. Consider using it as a planning tool instead. The RFP is full of clues about a potential client or service area. If you know this contract comes out every two years, use the RFP to develop a plan to set your firm up for the win. If this is the second or third RFP you've seen for a particular service area, consider getting into that line of business.
