Benjamin Franklin played a critical role in the American Revolution. He traveled to France as an old man and secured money, munitions, and military expertise. Without these, it is unlikely colonial militias could have prevailed against a far more organized and fortified opponent. So how is it that a doddering old man pulled off this brilliant feat of diplomacy and foreign aid? Was it his eloquence? His intelligence? His personal suave? No. It was his reputation.1
By the time Franklin arrived in France he was practically a national hero, highly regarded for his experiments with electricity, his scientific mind, and his rise from humble roots. Franklin was a master at leveraging his reputation to persuade the undecided to his point of view and get results that matter. There is a great lesson here for those of us building Professional Services (PS) firms.
