After forty years in the PR business, I've found many professional service firms and others are guilty of making a number of the same mistakes. For instance, they think a press release means slapping "For Immediate Release" across the top of an internal document and blasting it out to the world.
Here then are the final five rules of great PR that will keep you in good stead:
#6. Stretch beyond core media.
We often work in the housing industry, for example, and maintain relationships with a cadre of shelter magazine editors—both trade and consumer. We also push the envelope and are willing to develop new relationships. For example we got Northeastern Log Homes of Kenduskeag, ME covered in a six-part series by Field & Stream—a related media but a little outside the core shelter press.
#7. Don't look like you just took Journalism 101.
