How a Rebranding Effort Went Viral with an Unusual Direct Mail Campaign

Founded in 2003, GotVMail in Needham, Massachusetts had done a great job of positioning itself as a telecommunications solutions company for entrepreneurs. However, as the 45-employee company grew to offer more technology solutions for entrepreneurs, the name wasn’t exactly reflecting its creative, fast-paced culture—or its goals of becoming a comprehensive technology solutions provider for entrepreneurs.

After years of talking about rebranding, the company finally took action in September 2008. Over the course of six months, the management and marketing teams came up with a new name (Grasshopper) and look. To get attention for the rebranding launch in May 2009, they came up with an inspirational video and a truly memorable add-in to their direct mail package: five chocolate-covered grasshoppers. The package was sent to 5,000 of the most powerful influencers in the country.
