By Nancy Fox
Steven did something very out of the ordinary—for him.
He actually pulled out the eight business cards he had collected at the networking event he attended the previous night and reviewed each of them. He discarded four as being less relevant to his business and then proceeded to follow up with the remaining four. He followed up via email with each, requesting to get together—specifically breakfast.
By the next morning he had three breakfast dates on his calendar. At each meeting, Steven and his new contacts shared information about their businesses, a bit about their companies, and at the end of breakfast, shook hands declaring to keep the connection going.
Six months later, Steven and each of these three new contacts had not reconnected or continued the dialogue.
Sound familiar?
First, let's congratulate Steven for reviewing those precious business cards and following up with new contacts within 24 hours. This is a rare enough action step. Most of us have dozens of business cards wasting away in top desk drawers.
