How do things work at Jossey-Bass? What trends do they notice in the business book industry, and what are they looking for in book proposals? In this interview, Acquisitions Editor Neal Maillet discusses the inner workings of this well-regarded business book publisher, and sheds some light on the publishing industry as a whole.

Read about how the selection process works at Jossey-Bass, trends among successful business book authors, and general advice on making the most out of your book.

Neal Maillet answers the following questions:

  • What do you look for in a good book proposal? What must it include? What are some elements that authors should not include but often do?

  • How does the selection process work at Jossey-Bass?

  • How critical is an author’s marketing platform to your decision to represent a book?

  • Have you noticed any general trends among successful business books that help you predict how well they will do?

  • In terms of publishing contracts, which sections are typically negotiable?

  • Do you think that authors with literary agents have a great advantage over those who do not have representation?

  • If you were trying to sell an author on Jossey-Bass, why would you tell them they should work with your house?

  • When should an author begin to get in contact with a publisher? Is there a best way for them to submit their proposal to you?

  • Do you have any advice for first-time authors regarding their expectations around the marketing of the book? How much of the marketing should they be responsible for?

  • Do you have any last advice for aspiring business book authors hoping to publish with Jossey-Bass?

“I think the primary thing that gets me interested in something is how original the idea is, how well the author expresses himself or herself, and how well-regarded the author is. Does he or she have a marketing platform or network? Do they do public speaking? Things like that.

“One thing we say at Jossey-Bass is that, even though we are very closely incorporated into the Wiley marketing and sales system, we still have some of our small-publisher culture.”
